At the Men’s Resource Center we believe in the importance of treating the whole person – mind, body, and spirit. We have found massage and bodywork therapies to be a surprisingly effective part of the healing process.
Although the body is often overlooked as part of the healing process, it’s quite essential.
The body:
- is where we feel our emotions
- carries the memory of past events, both pleasurable and traumatic
- expresses inner conflict as muscular tension
- translates unconscious beliefs into habitual postures, movements, and behaviors
When a man spends his entire life keeping certain emotions under control, he uses his body to do it. It may be entirely unconscious, but the body is exerting tremendous tension to keep it all under wraps. Even when he reaches the point where he wants to change, his body is often a powerful barrier to change because it has reinforced his old patterns every day of his life.
Massage and bodywork help loosen the grip that these patterns have on the body, freeing up the mind, emotions, and spirit, and allowing much greater freedom to choose new ways of responding to life.
Bodywork is individually tailored to each man’s needs, and may incorporate any of the following:
Relaxation Massage
- Relieves stress and tension
- Calms the mind and nervous system
- Releases endorphins – the “feel-good” neurotransmitters
- Improves circulation and immune response
Deep Tissue Massage
- Relieves the pain of chronic tension
- Relaxes tight, sore muscles
- Improves digestion and respiration
- Improves circulation
Myofascial Release
- Focuses on muscular fascia (connective tissue)
- Facilitates lasting structural change
- Helps change physical patterns, which is often crucial to anchoring emotional changes
CranioSacral Therapy
- Focuses on connective tissue of the head and spine
- Facilitates release of core restrictions in the central nervous system
- Helps change physical patterns, which is often crucial to anchoring emotional changes
