In-person counseling and therapy are essential components of the work done by the Men’s Resource Center of West Michigan. We provide a comprehensive array of specialized programs of individual and group counseling, psycho-educational classes, Somatic therapy (including bodywork, massage, and Hakomi), and assessment/evaluation services. In short, we provide holistic care for a man’s mind, body, and spirit.
Men can be smart, strong, focused and efficient; they can also struggle with personal limitations and are likely to face certain personal issues and psychological challenges particular to their gender:
- Restricted range of feeling
- Difficulties with intimacy
- Poor communication skills
- Controlling and rigid behavior
- Limited psychological insight
- Impulsiveness
- Suppressed depression
- Balancing work and home
- Personal meaning and identity
We have developed a therapeutic approach which helps men overcome these and other obstacles so they can achieve progress in counseling and live more fulfilling lives. Our specialized counseling programs are designed to help men make personal changes resulting in improved self-esteem, healthier relationships, decreased problematic behavior, and improved management of thoughts and feelings.
Our treatments are tailored to the individual. We begin all counseling with a thorough 1:1 intake assessment process with a therapist usually taking three separate sessions. We provide a safe and confidential space to learn about the scope and nuances of the presenting problem and important historical personal information, while building a therapeutic rapport and developing an individualized treatment plan.
While we believe issues such as anger management, addictions, and substance abuse are well-addressed in men’s support groups, we also recognize that not all men are comfortable working in such a setting. We honor that fear and will work with them individually. Many who are initially reluctant to enter men’s support groups quickly become comfortable in group settings and enjoy the interaction with other men who have similar personal struggles. This experience paves the way for effective living outside of the group.
The Men’s Resource Center provides effective therapy for issues including:
- Relationship help for men such as separation and divorce
- Mid-life crisis
- PTSD
- Alcohol and drug abuse
- Anger management
- Grief
- Criminal behavior
- Pornography addiction

- Developmental issues

No Doubt in My Mind
There is no doubt in my mind that without the time I spent at the Men’s Resource Center, I would have continued to live a cycle of ups and downs marked by a trail of broken relationships and increasing self loathing and frustration.
