It’s estimated that up to 10% of men struggle with a sexual compulsion or addiction. It can manifest in a variety of ways: a fixation with Internet pornography, exhibitionism, promiscuity, obsessive masturbation, visits to adult establishments, or pay for sex encounters. The costs of sex addiction can be as destructive for the addict as for those who love him: divorce, duplicity, disease, shame, anxiety, depression, and escalation of behavior sometimes leading to criminal behavior.
Of course, not every man who uses pornography or visits adult establishments, or who pays for sex encounters is addicted to sex. These behaviors become concerning when they begin to cause negative personal or relationship consequences. For example, a man who hides his occasional use of porn because of moral or religious reasons. Or, a man who has affairs despite his love and care for his partner. Or a man who begins to doubt whether his relationship to sex is a healthy one.
Since our founding in 2000, the Men’s Resource Center of West Michigan has worked with men who are struggling with — or are concerned about — sexually addicted or compulsive behaviors. We have an experienced team and specialized programs to help men move beyond their sexual addiction or problematic behaviors.
Some Warning Signs of Addiction
There are warning signs that an individual’s relationship with sex is becoming an addiction. These include:
- the recurrent failure to resist impulses to engage in sexual behavior such as Internet pornography, affairs, or use of adult establishments when that behavior becomes compulsive, problematic, or destructive. It includes the unsuccessful effort to stop, reduce, or control these behaviors.
- an inordinate amount of time attaining sex, being sexual, or recovering from sexual experiences.
- preoccupation with sexual activity resulting in failure to fulfill occupational, academic, or relational obligations.
- continued engagement in sexual behavior despite social, financial, psychological, and physical problems caused by or exacerbated by the behavior.
- overwhelming feelings of distress, anxiety, restlessness, and irritability if unable to engage in sexual behavior.
- a sense of secretiveness, guilt, and duplicity surrounding the behavior.
- the need to increase the intensity, frequency, number, and risk of sexual behaviors in order to achieve a heightened pleasurable effect.
If you (or others close to you) are concerned about your relationship with sex or behaviors you believe are getting out of control, we invite you to get a professional opinion. Although self-assessment is a good first step, a professional can help you take the next step in the assessment process if you are contemplating whether you have a problem.
You’re Not Alone
At the Men’s Resource Center, we work to help men increase their ability to manage intrusive and obsessive thoughts and overwhelming and compulsive urges so that they can eliminate the addictive process and live their lives more fully. Because we also recognize that living and relating with men who struggle with sex and pornography addiction is unnerving and complicated, we offer education, guidance, coaching, and counseling for partners, children, and other family members of these men.
What sets us apart from most other centers that offer help for sex and pornography issues or addiction is that we offer specialized support groups for sex addiction. The research and our clinical experience strongly suggest that group work is the treatment of choice and the gold standard. Sex addiction support groups have proven to be the most effective in working on accountability, self-management, and shame reduction. In group, men meet other men who are also struggling with addiction. In talking with and listening to one another, they get the support and insight to make positive changes in their life and relationships.
Often what men discover is that sex addiction or compulsive sexual behavior are symptoms of core problems with intimate relationships, emotional intelligence, masculine identities, past trauma, or other psychological issues. Through coaching, and in groups, they learn the discipline of not acting out their problems, while benefiting from the healing and growth of honestly talking about their issues. Doing this work with other men takes courage and strength.
